HEART Inclusive Arts Community will present Taking Up Space, its latest exhibition of large-scale works, at the Gibbes Museum of Art.
The exhibition brings together a remarkable collection of works that celebrate presence in all its forms, from the physical to the emotional and the personal to the universal. Each piece is a declaration of visibility, confidence and creative power.
Artists whose perspectives have too often been overlooked have always been part of the story of art. Their work, vision and contributions belong within our cultural landscape, whether history has acknowledged them or not.
Taking Up Space is both a celebration and a reminder: These artists are not asking to be included. They have always belonged.
The exhibition invites visitors to consider who gets seen, whose stories are told and what becomes possible when artists are recognized for the strength of their vision, voice and artistry.
Presented by HEART, a nonprofit contemporary arts studio for artists with developmental disabilities, the exhibition reflects the organization's commitment to supporting artists as they grow their creative practices.
For more than 10 years, HEART has fostered a studio where artists are supported and celebrated for being their authentic selves. The studio currently serves 25 artists, each of whom has developed a unique artistic practice. Through creative expression, participants gain a sense of accomplishment, acceptance, self-esteem, purpose and belonging.
