A celebratory crowd gathered last week in the heart of Mount Pleasant to witness the official groundbreaking of Caliente Ballroom—a long-awaited project that brings together the vision of local entrepreneur Lynda Byrd and professional ballroom dancer Artur Malakyan. The event marked the next phase for the growing dance studio, which has become a hub for creativity, community, and movement since its founding in 2019.
“This project represents two dreams coming together: my desire to take on a commercial venture, and Artur Malakyan’s dream of owning and operating his own full-service dance studio right here in America,” said Lynda Byrd, who serves as the driving force behind the studio’s business development. “It’s also a chance to give something back—to create a vibrant space where the community can come together, move together, and grow together.”
Byrd, a Charleston-based entrepreneur, brings vision, strategy, and leadership to the partnership, working alongside Malakyan to expand the studio’s offerings and long-term impact. Their collaboration is supported by Vitre’ Ravenel Stephens and Parker Richard of Factotum Real Estate, who helped identify the land and launch the project. Architect Kevin Whalley and his team at Architecture +, along with the Town of Mount Pleasant, have been instrumental in planning a facility that reflects Caliente’s vibrant energy and mission. Harbor Contracting is leading the build, with Peter McKeller and Project Manager Preston coordinating next steps.
Founded by Artur Malakyan, Caliente Ballroom brings a rich international perspective to Charleston’s dance scene. The founder, chief instructor, and choreographer began dancing at age 6 in Yerevan, Armenia, where he later majored in performing arts and competed internationally. After raising generations of dancers in Armenia, Malakyan moved to Charleston nearly a decade ago. In November 2019, he launched Caliente Ballroom, where he now choreographs all routines for annual showcases and provides private dance lessons, competitive training, and group instruction across a variety of styles.
At Caliente Ballroom, dance is more than movement—it’s a celebration of passion and expression. The studio’s mission is to ignite a love for dance, foster connection, and create a joyful, inclusive space for all. Whether learning, improving, or simply having fun, Caliente offers a vibrant experience for dancers at every level.
Until construction is complete, Caliente Ballroom will continue to operate at its current Mount Pleasant location, with full class offerings and private instruction available. This June, the studio will host a ballet summer camp for children, inviting young dancers to explore the fundamentals of ballet in a fun, nurturing environment.
With permits secured and the team in place, the new studio is on track for completion by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
“We can’t wait to dance with you at the grand opening of Caliente,” Byrd added.
