Second Chance Thrift Shop is proving that community support can be both powerful and hilarious. On Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, the longstanding volunteer organization will partner with production company Cause You Need A Laugh to present “Gently Used Jokes,” a live stand-up comedy fundraiser aimed at helping the shop find a new, larger home.
Since opening in 1988, Second Chance Thrift Shop has operated with a straightforward mission: to support those most in need in the Summerville community.
Unlike traditional thrift stores, Second Chance functions as a local grantmaker. Through its Community Support Awards Program, the shop uses the net proceeds generated from donated goods to award direct cash grants to other local nonprofits across Summerville.
To date, the organization has awarded more than $1 million to local charities serving area families, veterans, seniors and children. Every item donated, purchase made and hour volunteered helps create real, positive change in the community.
Now, after nearly a decade at its current location, Second Chance has outgrown the space.
