The Gibbes Museum of Art today announced a lineup of special exhibitions coming to the museum in the fall of 2024. The exhibitions will explore a vast array of topics, inviting visitors to discover new art forms and genres while advancing the museum’s core themes of health and wellness, social justice, innovation and conservation and the environment.
“Connecting the Charleston community with diverse art forms and fostering creativity are at the heart of the Gibbes’ mission," says Angela Mack, president and CEO of the Gibbes Museum of Art. "We look forward to the upcoming fall season filled with captivating exhibitions featuring the works of extraordinary artists for guests to experience.”
Special Exhibitions:

Focusing intently on small groups of works, the artist spotlight series features engaging profiles of artists held in the Gibbes permanent collection. This rotating series will feature early twentieth century painter Edward Middleton Manigault who gained acclaim during his brief life for his visionary efforts in modernist styles, and renowned artist, curator and scholar David Driskell who’s work celebrates ancestry, faith, community, and the serenity of nature.
Celebrating the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, October 11, 2024 – January 12, 2025
The Gibbes Museum of Art has awarded 15 artists with the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art since its inception in 2008. Supported by the museum’s dynamic young professionals’ auxiliary group, Society 1858, the Prize recognizes artists whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South. This exhibition celebrates winners and finalists of what has become one of the South’s most prestigious art prizes.
BEEPLE, December 13, 2024 – May 2025
In collaboration with Beeple Studios, led by Mike Winkelmann, aka Beeple, the Gibbes Museum of Art will feature Beeple's latest kinetic sculptures. Beeple, a trailblazer in digital art, gained worldwide recognition after his NFT artwork EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS sold for a record-breaking price at Christie's in 2021. His work, particularly the generative sculpture HUMAN ONE, has been showcased in several prestigious museums, including the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas—the first U.S. institution to display this piece. This marks the first time that Beeple’s kinetic sculptures will be featured together in Charleston.
