Conservationist and naturalist Tom Austin’s debut book, The Flora and Fauna of Edisto Island and the Lowcountry Sea Islands: Book One, offers a fascinating and accessible exploration of the plants and animals that call the South Carolina Lowcountry home. Through stunning photographs and detailed, well-researched writing, Austin brings to life the unique ecosystems of Edisto Island and the Sea Islands.
Arranged like an almanac, The Flora and Fauna of Edisto Island and the Lowcountry Sea Islands: Book One features one plant and animal for each week of the year, corresponding with when each species is at its peak. This captivating seasonal guide offers readers a deeper appreciation for the region’s diverse wildlife, from the familiar to the often overlooked. Whether you're a longtime resident or a newcomer, Austin’s personal reflections and fascinating insights will inspire curiosity and a greater connection to the natural world.
Tom Austin, an avid naturalist, independent researcher, and photographer, has dedicated his life to studying and preserving the natural landscapes of the Lowcountry. Growing up on Toogoodoo Creek, Austin’s childhood was shaped by his connection to the land, spending his days exploring the environment and developing a love for wildlife photography, bird watching, and botany. A graduate of Clemson University, Austin has contributed to local conservation efforts through his work with the Edisto Island Open Land Trust and his role as a board member for the Carolina Butterfly Society and SC Association of Naturalists.
