After a sold-out, high-energy Atlanta premiere, the independent psychological thriller Crimson Cove will return home for a one-night-only Charleston premiere Jan. 29 at the historic Terrace Theater.
Shot primarily on Folly Beach, Crimson Cove is deeply rooted in the Lowcountry community that helped shape it. Local businesses, landmarks and coastal textures are woven directly into the film, grounding the story in a world that feels lived-in, volatile and unmistakably regional.
For the Batemans — producer Brittany Bateman and director Loyd Bateman — the Charleston screening serves as both a homecoming and a thank-you to the community that supported the film from its earliest days. Brittany Bateman partnered with her husband to bring Crimson Cove to life outside the traditional studio system, using a grassroots, community-first approach they call the Misfit Model — a philosophy rooted in collaboration, transparency and artists supporting artists without waiting for institutional approval.
Director Loyd Bateman brings more than 26 years of experience in the film industry to his feature directorial debut. A longtime stunt performer, stunt coordinator, fight choreographer and action designer, Bateman has doubled for actors including Tom Cruise, Conor McGregor and Tom Hardy and worked on projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Loki, Hawkeye and Malignant. He recently completed action design work on the upcoming feature Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. With Crimson Cove, Bateman intentionally shifts from large-scale studio productions to a more personal, character-driven form of storytelling.
“After decades designing action for some of the biggest productions in the world, I wanted to make something personal — something built from the ground up with a small team,” Bateman said. “Our goal was to show aspiring filmmakers what’s possible independently, even on a limited budget, when you trust your collaborators and your community.”
Set in a quiet beach town where tensions erupt between locals and visiting outsiders, Crimson Cove explores fear, class division and psychological unraveling when people are pushed beyond their limits. Blending dark humor with psychological tension and coastal grit, the town itself becomes a character — watchful, volatile and complicit.
Music plays a central role in shaping the film’s atmosphere, with sound woven throughout by genre-defying band Dirtwire, grounding the story in rhythm, unease and momentum.
The Charleston premiere will include red carpet arrivals, the feature presentation and a live filmmaker and cast Q&A led by Bateman. The discussion will offer audiences insight into the film’s unconventional production, the Misfit Model philosophy and the realities of making independent cinema outside the traditional system.
In keeping with the filmmakers’ commitment to supporting emerging voices, the evening will also spotlight the next generation of storytellers. A student short film from Trident Technical College will screen before the feature, reinforcing Misfit Circus Productions’ mission to create theatrical opportunities for student and independent filmmakers.
Made without studio backing or compromise, Crimson Cove’s return to Charleston is both a celebration and a statement about the power of independent cinema built through community collaboration.
