College of Charleston Stages and the College's Department of Theatre and Dance will present a spring dance concert featuring original choreography. Entitled “Who We Are,” the concert is a compelling showcase that delves into the ongoing journey of identity. The concert features eight pieces choreographed by College of Charleston students.
“I am immensely proud of our talented and dedicated student choreographers,” remarks Gretchen McLaine, Professor of Dance and Department Chair. McLaine also serves as Artistic Director for the concert. “These students have worked diligently to make their stories come to life.”
Through movement, these emerging artists explore the complex intersections of the personal and professional. Each piece offers a distinct perspective, reflecting the diverse voices and experiences of the student body.
“This concert is comprised entirely of new work in a variety of genres, including classical ballet, contemporary modern, and Latin-infused jazz,” says McLaine. “We are excited to feature two casts for each piece to provide more opportunities for our student dancers.” Each cast will have four performances in the Simons Center Black Box Theatre during the run of the concert.
Student choreographers include dance majors Alexa Balser, Amara Alexander, Skylar Carroll, Hayden Horton, Sophie Ketchum and Elizabeth Vazquez, as well as dance minors Corrina Castillo and Annie Davis. Theatre students Kaede Chikuma, Emily Hutto, Quinn Mills and Hannah Moore serve as the concert’s lighting designers. Theatre major Jenna Williamson is the costume designer. The concert features 44 dancers.
