The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) proudly announces the release of the 300th episode of the Charleston Time Machine, the award-winning history podcast hosted and produced by CCPL Historian Dr. Nic Butler. Since the Charleston Time Machine’s inception in 2017, the podcast has served as a gateway to the rich and vibrant past of the area, captivating audiences with stories that educate, inspire, and entertain. The 300th episode, Frederick Douglass in 1888 Charleston, is now available online and on major podcast providers.

Dr. Butler, an interdisciplinary historian with a passion for storytelling, has dedicated himself to uncovering and sharing the intricate and fascinating details of Charleston’s history. With each episode of the Charleston Time Machine, Dr. Butler transports listeners through time, exploring significant events, influential figures, and lesser-known tales that have shaped the Holy City.
His dynamic approach and engaging narratives have earned the podcast a devoted following among history enthusiasts, educators, and curious minds alike, amassing over 650,000 total plays and reaching listeners in 50 countries. With 137 total hours of audio content, the series offers an extensive archive for those eager to explore Charleston’s past. Additionally, Dr. Butler has written an astounding 1.3 million words on Charleston history through the podcast, further solidifying his role as a leading voice in historical storytelling. The Charleston Time Machine won “Best Podcast” in the Charleston City Paper’s Best Of Charleston Awards in 2019 and has been nominated several other times since.
A native of Greenville County, South Carolina, Dr. Butler attended the University of South Carolina before earning a Ph.D. in musicology from Indiana University. His extensive career includes serving as an archivist for the South Carolina Historical Society, an adjunct faculty member at the College of Charleston, and a historical consultant for the City of Charleston. His deep knowledge and infectious enthusiasm have made him a beloved figure in the world of Charleston history.
CCPL launched the Charleston Time Machine with the premiere episode in January 2017 as part of its mission to make history accessible to all, using modern technology to bring the past to life.
