Charleston Stage invites audiences to experience the wit and unforgettable storytelling of Neil Simon, one of America's most celebrated comedy writers, in Broadway Bound, running October 14 through November 1, 2026, at the Historic Dock Street Theatre. The production is directed by Charleston Stage Founder and Director Emeritus Julian Wiles.
Set in Brooklyn in 1949, Broadway Bound follows aspiring comedy writers Eugene and Stanley Jerome as they pursue their dreams of making it in show business. While the brothers work to break into radio comedy, they find themselves navigating the changing dynamics of their family, including their parents’ troubled marriage and the challenges of growing up.
The final chapter of Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical Eugene trilogy, Broadway Bound combines Simon’s signature humor with poignant moments of family life, exploring the relationships that shape us and the courage to pursue our dreams. Simon’s celebrated Broadway career spans more than 30 productions, including The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, and Brighton Beach Memoirs.
Under the direction of Julian Wiles, Charleston Stage brings Simon’s beloved comedy-drama to the Historic Dock Street Theatre, offering audiences an opportunity to experience this touching and timeless story in one of Charleston’s most historic theatrical settings.
“While being wonderfully funny, Broadway Bound still has some great one liners," stated Director Julian Wiles. "This special play is Simon’s dramatic valentine to his family and his growing up. The most realistic and heartfelt of Simon’s plays, it celebrates a household full of heart and heartbreak as well. It is the genius of Neil Simon, that he could create a work where comedy and drama work hand in hand. In many ways, Simon changed the face of the theatre (and television and movies as well) to give us, perhaps for the first time, a true dramedy—the mainstay of many plays, TV series, and movies today. Simon’s genius was his ability to give us both laughter and a lump in our throats in the same play. In Broadway Bound, Simon gives us a play that mirrors the ups and downs of life. That is the mark of great theatre.”
