Charleston Stage kicks off the new year with a fresh, spirited take on a beloved classic: Kate Hamill’s acclaimed adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, based on the novel by Jane Austen. Directed by Artistic Director Marybeth Clark, the production runs January 21st through February 8th at the historic Dock Street Theatre.
Hamill’s celebrated script infuses Austen’s sharp wit and emotional depth with fast-paced theatricality, breathing new life into the world of the Dashwood sisters. Audiences can expect romance, humor, heartbreak, and a dynamic ensemble bringing Austen’s timeless story into vivid motion.
“We’re thrilled to share Kate Hamill’s vibrant version of this story,” said Director Marybeth Clark. “Her adaptation highlights the humor and humanity in Austen’s work, while also giving actors a chance to stretch in bold, inventive ways. It’s a true celebration of love, resilience, and sisterhood.”
Sense and Sensibility follows Elinor and Marianne Dashwood as they navigate sudden upheaval, shifting social expectations, and the unpredictable landscape of the heart. Hamill’s modern theatrical lens keeps the story snappy and resonant while honoring the rich emotional stakes that have captivated readers for generations. If you love Jane Austen you'll love this show. If you haven't read Jane Austen, you'll love this show.
