This April, Charleston Stage invites the community to celebrate the inaugural Charleston Theatre Month, a citywide initiative honoring the vibrant theatre culture that has shaped Charleston for nearly 300 years.
Home to the historic Dock Street Theatre - America’s first purpose-built theatre, originally opened in 1736 - Charleston has long been a place where storytelling, performance, and community intersect. Charleston Theatre Month builds on that legacy, shining a spotlight on the artists, organizations, and audiences that continue to make live theatre an essential part of the city’s cultural fabric.
“Charleston has been a theatre town for nearly three centuries,” said Tim Rogers, Managing Director and CEO of Charleston Stage. “Long before Broadway or national touring circuits, people here were gathering to experience live performance together. Charleston Theatre Month is about celebrating that history—but also recognizing the incredible work happening on stages across our community today.”
Throughout April, Charleston Stage will highlight performances, partnerships, and special events while encouraging audiences to explore productions across the region, including those by PURE Theatre, Footlight Players, and Village Repertory Co., among others.
As part of the celebration, Charleston Stage will host a special screening of You Are Here: A Come From Away Story on April 14, offering audiences a deeper look at the true story behind the Tony Award-winning musical Come From Away, currently on stage at the Dock Street Theatre through May 3.
Charleston Theatre Month is designed as the beginning of a broader, long-term effort to elevate and unify the region’s theatre community, with plans to expand the initiative in 2027 in celebration of Charleston Stage’s 50th Anniversary.
“Live theatre has always been about connection,” Rogers added. “It brings people together, creates shared experiences, and reflects who we are as a community. That’s what we’re celebrating this month.”
