Charleston Opera Theater (COT) is thrilled to present Gioachino Rossini’s exuberant comic masterpiece, Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), on Friday, March 27 and Sunday, March 29 at the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre in partnership with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO).
One of the most beloved and frequently performed operas in the repertoire, Il barbiere di Siviglia is a whirlwind of wit, romance, and vocal virtuosity. Featuring sparkling arias, rapid-fire ensembles, and unforgettable characters, Rossini’s timeless comedy follows the ingenious barber Figaro as he schemes to unite the young Count Almaviva with the clever and spirited Rosina—much to the dismay of her overbearing guardian, Dr. Bartolo.
Charleston Opera Theater’s production brings together an outstanding cast of acclaimed artists to breathe fresh life into this operatic favorite.
After the success in his company debut in COT’s 2024 production of La Bohème, and joining us directly from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York is baritone Benjamin Taylor starring as the irrepressible Figaro. Known for his commanding stage presence and vocal versatility, Taylor has been praised for his “booming, handsome baritone” and charismatic portrayals across operatic and concert repertoire. As Figaro, Taylor brings both vocal brilliance and irresistible charm to one of opera’s most iconic characters. Acclaimed bass Kevin Glavin also returns to COT to appear as the hilariously pompous Dr. Bartolo. Celebrated for his impeccable comedic timing and nuanced musicianship, Glavin has performed with major opera companies across North America, including the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and San Francisco Opera. A master of patter and character roles, his portrayal of Bartolo promises both musical excellence and laugh-out-loud theatricality. Making their company debuts will be acclaimed soprano Joylyn Rushing singing the role of Rosina and tenor Mingou Liu singing Count Almaviva.
Harold Meers, Executive Artistic Director of COT said, “We are once again thrilled to bring you back to the city of Seville, but this time through Rossini’s lens of comedy. Our stellar cast is anchored by Metropolitan Opera baritone Benjamin Taylor in the title role of Figaro and features both faces familiar to our stage and some fresh, rising talent. Director Haley Stamats, from our celebrated production of La Bohème, returns to stage these performances which promise to be bright, funny, fast paced, and will leave a smile on your face as you leave the theater. Don’t miss this opportunity to see and hear this comedic masterpiece accompanied by the dynamic Charleston Symphony.”
Perfect for longtime opera lovers and first-time attendees alike, Il barbiere di Siviglia offers an experience of infectious energy, dazzling vocal feats, and timeless humor!
