The Board of Directors of Charleston Opera Theater has unanimously approved a new leadership structure designed to support the organization’s continued artistic excellence and long-term growth. Effective July 1, 2026, the Board has established the position of General Director, appointing Edward Brennan as the company’s first General Director, while Founder Harold Meers transitions from Executive and Artistic Director to Founder and Artistic Director.
This evolution is a response to continued success. As Charleston Opera Theater has grown in artistic ambition, audience reach, and organizational capacity, the Board recognized the opportunity to create a leadership structure that will strengthen both the company’s artistic and executive leadership for years to come.
The new model reflects the governance structure embraced by many of the nation’s leading opera companies, allowing Meers to devote his full attention to artistic leadership while Brennan directs the organization’s strategic planning, fundraising, finance, marketing, operations, governance, and community partnerships. Together, they will lead Charleston Opera Theater into its next phase of artistic and organizational growth.
“Since its inception in 2019, Charleston Opera Theater has grown by leaps and bounds to become one of Charleston’s most talked about arts organizations,” said Meers. “We have earned a reputation for high artistic standards and ingenious productions while maintaining a mindset of fiscal responsibility. As I take stock of our past, revel in our rapid growth, and look forward to our 2026/27 Season, I realize it is time to facilitate a change. Our future will require a more divided and specific focus in terms of attention to our corporate needs and the artistic ones.”
Meers continued, “I am pleased to announce that our Board of Directors has promoted and appointed Edward Brennan to the position of General Director. Edward has been a dedicated and hard-working member of our team. I have watched his knowledge and skill grow over the last few years and I’m proud of the leader he has become. I have complete confidence in his ability to thrive in this new position. Great things are on the horizon for our organization both artistically and fiscally, and I look forward to working with Edward as we lead Charleston Opera Theater into its next chapter.”
Since opening its doors in 2019, Charleston Opera Theater has become one of the Lowcountry’s fastest-growing performing arts organizations, recognized for its artistic excellence, innovative productions, and responsible fiscal stewardship. Today, the company welcomes patrons representing 50% of South Carolina’s counties and 21 states across the country, reflecting its growing artistic reputation and expanding regional impact. Through strategic partnerships, educational programming, and ambitious productions, Charleston Opera Theater continues to broaden access to world-class opera while enriching the cultural life of the Lowcountry.
Board Chair Susan Sullivan said the Board’s decision reflects both confidence in the organization’s future and a commitment to sustainable growth.
“As an organization, we have focused important time examining what our growth and artistic standards will demand of us so we can ensure delivery of the world-class opera you’ve come to expect. With Harold’s announcement to step aside from the executive part of his duties, an important opportunity arose to focus our efforts on our business needs as well as our artistic needs.”
Sullivan continued, “As the Board’s Chairperson I, too, have worked closely with Edward. The entire Board is excited about the energy and passion that Edward brings to Charleston Opera Theater. As he recently said to me, ‘success requires more than passion — it requires structure, strategy, and leadership. Together, with renewed organizational focus, we’ll build the framework that channels our passion into even greater artistic and operational achievements.’”
