Spring has arrived, and with it comes the height of kitten season, a time when animal shelters across the Lowcountry see an overwhelming influx of vulnerable newborn kittens in need of care.
To rally community support, Charleston Animal Society is hosting its annual Kitten Shower on Sunday, April 26, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Park Circle Pavilion in North Charleston. The event invites the public to celebrate, learn, and take action during one of the most critical times of the year for Charleston Animal Society.
Each spring, thousands of kittens are born in the Charleston region, many of them orphaned or in need of intensive, around-the-clock care. Unlike adult cats, neonatal kittens require bottle feeding every few hours, warmth, and constant monitoring — a level of care that can only be provided through a strong network of dedicated foster volunteers.
The Kitten Shower is designed to inspire and equip community members to step into that life-saving role. “This is one of the most important and rewarding ways the public can make a direct impact,” said Charleston Animal Society Foster and Rescue Director Jodi Osborne. “Fostering kittens not only saves lives, it frees up critical shelter space and gives these tiny animals the chance to grow strong in a home environment.”
Attendees will have the opportunity to:
- Learn how to become a kitten foster parent
- Sign up on-site for Charleston Animal Society’s foster program
- Meet staff and experienced fosters who can share tips and stories
- Enjoy family-friendly activities in a festive, baby shower-themed atmosphere
In addition to recruiting fosters, the Kitten Shower serves as a donation drive for essential supplies. The organization is seeking much-needed items such as kitten formula, bottles, heating pads, soft blankets, and cleaning supplies — all crucial tools in caring for fragile newborns. For those unable to foster, donations provide another powerful way to support the program. Every item and contribution helps ensure that no kitten is turned away due to lack of resources. The event is free and open to the public, making it an ideal outing for families, animal lovers, and anyone looking to make a meaningful difference in their community.
As Charleston Animal Society continues its mission to end unnecessary euthanasia and care for the region’s most vulnerable animals, the Kitten Shower stands as a reminder that saving lives is a shared responsibility — and one that begins with community compassion.
