Press Release
Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) in collaboration with the Coastal South Carolina Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), invites families with elementary-age students to participate in the Three Little Pigs STEM Challenge on Saturday, April 1st, 2023 from 1 pm to 2 p.m. at Cane Bay Library, located at 1655 Cane Bay Blvd., Ste A., Summerville. Participants may register by visiting the Cane Bay Library or calling 843-719-4796.
Derik Pack, IEEE Member, will read a STEM book, offer a Q&A session about engineering and conduct a STEM activity. Parents are encouraged to participate and/or review a STEM & Cyber Safety packet. Free STEM home-use activity sources will also be shared with families. Pack will lead the students to design a house that will withstand the wolf’s blows (hair dryer) of destruction by using gumdrops, toothpicks and a paper plate to protect the pig. Supplies provided.
“It’s a one-hour family STEM event,” said Derik Pack, Section Chair for the Coastal South Carolina Section of IEEE. “Parents can take part in the STEM activity and/or review a STEM & Cybersafety packet we provide. Kids receive a STEM book reading, a Q&A Session about engineering and a STEM activity that is challenging and entertaining. The STEM activity is geared for elementary-age children as a first STEM event, and I’ve seen children as young as four years old engage and enjoy it.”
