Brad and Jennifer Moranz will present Blast from the Past — a ’60s & ’70s Rock and Roll Musical, an original production written by Brad Moranz. The story is described as a mix of Little Shop of Horrors, Superman, Field of Dreams and Back to the Future. The show features hit songs from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
The story takes place at an oldies record store, Blast from the Past, run by a hippie couple (played by Brad and Jennifer Moranz) and their daughter, Suzie.
When a meteor storm hits the store, Suzie and the records are exposed to radiation and come to life. Soon, Tom Jones and Frankie Valli are competing for Suzie’s affection, Austin Powers is flirting with her mother, and her father joins the Village People. Elvis, meanwhile, just wants people to stay off his blue suede shoes.
When the bank threatens to foreclose on the store, Suzie must find a way to save it. With help from a white-haired professor reminiscent of Doc Brown, she plans a concert featuring the revived performers. But when the effects of the meteor wear off and the singers disappear, the plan is in jeopardy — until a twist in the second act.
Blast from the Past will be performed at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at the Charleston Music Hall in downtown Charleston. Adult tickets are $46. For more information or to purchase tickets bradandjennifermoranz.
