The Avery Family Reunion returns to downtown Charleston on Sunday, August 25, 2024, from 2 pm to 6 pm at Burke High School. Hosted annually by the Avery Research Center for African American Heritage and Culture at College of Charleston, this year's reunion theme celebrates Gullah Geechee culture, in partnership with the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor NHA.
Since 2021, the Avery Family Reunion has grown into a beloved affair that brings together College of Charleston students, faculty and staff, and the broader tri-county community. Held each August at Burke High School–a former location of the Avery Research Center–this event offers community resources, local small business vendors, live music performances, games and entertainment, food, and more.
“The Avery Family Reunion is a can’t-miss event that thrives on the support and participation of the community," said Avery Research Center Executive Director Dr. Tamara Butler. "Part of our mission at Avery is to make African American history, especially in the Lowcountry, tangible and accessible to all.”
The 2024 Avery Family Reunion welcomes renowned cultural bearer and chef BJ Dennis' first-ever Gullah Market in Charleston. This highly anticipated, curated showcase also highlights Gullah Geechee vendors in arts, crafts, food, and storytelling. Other Reunion highlights include:
- A headline music performance from R&B/soul trio The TON3S (aka The Hamiltones)
- An opening music performance from Quiana Parler of Ranky Tanky
- A live Gullah Geechee cooking demo by Chef BJ Dennis
- Storytelling performances from Gullah Kinfolk Traveling Theater
- A dance performance from Deninufay African Drum & Dance Co.
- Music sets from two women DJs, Sista Misses and DJ Sease
- Community resource vendors from across Charleston and the Tri-county area
- Delicious cuisine from local Black-owned food trucks
- Giveaways and games for the entire family
While event admission to the reunion is free, attendees will need to carry cash or card to support the Gullah Market, other participating small business vendors, and food trucks. Registration is strongly suggested at averyfamilyreunion2024.
Burke High School is located at 244 President Street. Parking is available in the Citadel parking lot adjacent to the high school.
