Author Kathryn Austin will host a special in-person event on Jan. 10 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at La Cave (550 King Street) to celebrate her book, My Mother’s Other Daughter. The event invites readers and community members to engage with Austin’s work, meet the author, and take part in an intimate literary gathering in the heart of downtown Charleston.
Blending memoir and advocacy, My Mother’s Other Daughter explores the devastating realities of sibling alienation, elder abuse, and financial exploitation within families. Through her personal experience, Austin recounts how the death of her father and the decline of her mother exposed deep fractures between siblings, ultimately resulting in her being denied access to her mother and written out of her will. The book also examines how mental health challenges, including Austin’s lived experience with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), can complicate caregiving roles and leave individuals vulnerable during already fragile moments.
The Jan.10 event offers guests the opportunity to meet Kathryn Austin, purchase signed copies of the book, and connect with others in a relaxed, community-centered setting. Light bites will be provided, and attendees will have the chance to participate in a giveaway, including a dog bed from Anchor Pet Supply. Each book purchase will include a complimentary hat. The event will also offer guests an opportunity to support the Charleston Animal Society, reflecting Austin’s ongoing commitment to helping senior dogs through local fundraising efforts.
Designed as a space for conversation, the event underscores the power of personal storytelling to foster empathy, awareness, and connection around mental health and elder advocacy.
