Allegory Art Collective is pleased to present A Sense of Place, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Charleston-based artist Laura Dargan. The exhibition opens with a reception Thursday, Sept. 10, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and remains on view through Oct. 16.
Throughout her travels over the last few years, Dargan has come to understand just how deeply her surroundings shape her work. The distinct identity, emotional weight and character a place holds for her is what creates a sense of place — and those connections are where her ideas take form. They are connections she feels an instant urge to visualize.
In this collection of abstracted landscapes, color and form are only part of the story. Working from photo references and memory, Dargan builds compositions rooted in real locations while leaving room for something less fixed: a sense of place that may be known or entirely imagined.
A Sense of Place is on view at Allegory Art Collective, 2111 Heriot St. in Charleston, with a public opening reception Sept. 10 from 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Open gallery hours will be held throughout the exhibition on Wednesdays from 3-5 p.m. Additional viewing hours can be scheduled by appointment.
