Memphis rap royalty is coming to the Navy Yard. Academy Award winner Juicy J and his brother, Memphis rap legend Project Pat, will perform together as headliners of Kulture Klash 11, The Livity Foundation’s flagship arts and music festival, Saturday, Nov. 14, at Building 64 at Navy Yard Charleston.
Named “Best Cultural Event” and “Best Art Exhibit” by Charleston City Paper, Kulture Klash brings together music, visual art and live performance for one of Charleston’s largest celebrations of independent creativity. This year’s festival will feature 20 musical acts across four stages, more than 100 visual artists, dancers, performance artists and immersive installations.
The weekend begins Friday, Nov. 13, with a free art opening reception at Building 64, giving guests an opportunity to preview and purchase work from participating artists before Saturday’s festival.
Juicy J, a founding member of pioneering Memphis hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia, made history in 2006 when “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from Hustle & Flow won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Three 6 Mafia became the first hip-hop group to win an Oscar and the first hip-hop act to perform at the Academy Awards. Juicy J later built a successful solo career that includes the platinum hit “Bandz a Make Her Dance” and collaborations with artists including Katy Perry, Megan Thee Stallion and A$AP Rocky.
Project Pat, Juicy J’s older brother and a defining voice of Memphis rap, is known for tracks including “Chickenhead” and “Don’t Save Her” and the influential album Mista Don’t Play: Everythangs Workin. His appearance on Drake’s “Knife Talk” introduced his unmistakable sound to a new generation, with the song reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Kulture Klash has always been about bringing different forms of creativity together and giving Charleston artists an opportunity to share the stage with nationally recognized talent,” said David “Big Hair” Brisacher, founder of Kulture Klash and The Livity Foundation. “Having Juicy J and Project Pat perform together while showcasing more than 100 visual artists is exactly what Kulture Klash was created to do.
“More importantly, the impact extends beyond one weekend. Proceeds from Kulture Klash support The Livity Foundation’s cultural arts programming and organizations doing meaningful work throughout the Lowcountry. We’re celebrating creativity while helping ensure it continues to thrive in our community.”
