Community members, civil rights advocates and local organizations are calling for a full and transparent investigation into an incident in Berkeley County involving allegations of excessive force and retaliation against a person exercising First Amendment rights.
According to witnesses and evidence cited by advocates, the individual was engaged in speech directed at law enforcement when officers allegedly responded with unnecessary force and made an arrest. Community members have raised concerns that the response was disproportionate and may have violated the individual’s constitutional rights.
The incident has intensified concerns about the treatment of people who criticize law enforcement and the need for greater transparency and accountability, advocates said.
Those calling for action have asked the appropriate authorities to:
- Dismiss all charges arising from the arrest.
- Conduct an independent investigation into the arrest and use of force.
- Hold any officers found to have engaged in misconduct accountable.
- Review and strengthen department policies regarding First Amendment rights, de-escalation and the use of force.
