Hed Hi Studio Announces Art Show Featuring Legendary Southern California Creatives
On May 20th, from 6 pm to 10 pm, Hed Hi Studio in Charleston will open Check It, an art show featuring two legendary Southern California creatives. Artist Andy Davis and board shaper Jon Wegener joined forces to bring SoCal surf art to the streets of Charleston.
Dubbed the “best surf artist of our generation,” Andy Davis grew up watching the action sports industry bubble up in neighborhoods around him. Always daydreaming and drawing, he was obsessed with Southern California surf culture. He spent afternoons skateboarding around the Vans Shoe Company and talking surf history with friends. His authentic passion for surfing began to take shape in his colorful art – a fresh way to look at the energy of surfing while paying homage to classic surf iconography of the past. His legendary surf artwork has shown in galleries in all corners of the world, from Bali to Rome, from New York to Laguna Beach.
Jon Wegener grew up surfing and shaping in Southern California. He has been professionally shaping since 1987 and has dreamed of doing nothing else ever since. After his college years in San Diego, he returned to Hermosa Beach, CA and began to work on his passion full-time. In addition to starting Wegener Surfboards, he has also shaped for a number of other veteran shapers including Hap Jacobs and Bing Surfboards. In 2010 Jon moved to Encinitas, CA. As a board maker Jon has always tried to find the right board for the right conditions. Jon loves to make and ride a huge variety of surfboards.
Guests of Check It will get to view over thirty original paintings by Davis, housed in custom wooden frames made by Wegener. Ten hand shaped surfboards, both “traditional” fiberglass, as well as sacred Hawaiian Paipo and Alaia boards, from Wegener’s studio along with unique wooden bowls will also be available for purchase.
Opening night will feature live music from The Mango Furs out of Nashville, TN.
Check It will be exhibiting through June 18th at Hed Hi Studio. Check hedhistudio.com for viewing hours.
Hed Hi is located at 654 King Street, Suite D.
