Colleton County Animal Shelter Situation is “Dire”
WALTERBORO – Colleton County Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams with dogs and needs the public’s help.
“We have seen at least 15 litters of puppies come in during the past two months,” said Shelter Director Laura Clark. “We have not had to euthanize an animal for space in the past four years and we want to keep it that way. This is why we need the public to come give one of these dogs a second chance at happiness.”
No Kill South Carolina 2024 organized the transport of 10 puppies and three adult dogs to Charleston Animal Society.
“Colleton County always does an excellent job and they were our organization of the year in 2018,” said No Kill South Carolina Chief Project Officer Abigail Appleton, CAWA, PMP. “This overcrowding is emblematic of what we are seeing across the country and across the state. When we can, shelters need to continue to work together to help all of us weather the tough times.”
No Kill South Carolina 2024 is an initiative of Charleston Animal Society.
The Colleton County Animal Shelter is currently 25 dogs overcapacity. To make adoptions more appealing, the shelter is reducing dog and puppy adoption fees to $45. Adopters will also receive a voucher for a free engraved hunting dog collar from Bentons Feed and Seed.
“We have such a great variety of dogs up for adoption,” Clark said. “Each of our dogs come spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and behavior tested. All they need is for someone to come adopt!”
Currently, many of the dogs are being housed in a garage on the shelter property that is cooled with portable air conditioners.
“We need to try and get these dogs homes now before the weather heats up, it’s a dire situation,” Clark said.
