Press Release

Charleston County public high school juniors can now apply for the Department of Public Safety Student Leadership and Intern Program. Students will be trained to work in the Emergency Medical Services Department, and the Consolidated 9-1-1 Center. They will also have opportunities to visit Awendaw McClellanville Consolidated Fire Department to learn about fire service operations.

The internship is only offered to Charleston County public high school juniors and is paid $16.30/hour. The initial six-week summer program provides career readiness training in addition to industry recognized certifications and credentials. The program will begin June 16, 2023 and includes some weekends during the school year. Signed parental or guardian approval is required for students to participate. There is no cost to the student to join this program or for the certifications. Students are asked to submit their school transcripts with their application to verify that they are currently enrolled in a Charleston County School and have completed their junior year.

“We had a great group of students last summer received good feedback about the program,” said Deputy County Administrator of Public Safety Eric Watson. “We’re excited for those students to complete their internships and for a new group to start this year. The goal of this program is to provide opportunities for our youth while promoting Charleston County’s Public Safety services and give students a better understanding of the County’s responsibility to our community.”

“This program was wildly successful in its launch last summer,” said Rich Gordon, Executive Director of Career and Technology Education with Charleston County School District.  “Students participated in a paid work-based learning experience, earned industry-recognized credentials, and served their local community with some of Charleston’s finest.  We hope to continue this ‘grand slam’ partnership with Charleston County DPS for years to come.”

The full internship is a two-year program for high school students interested in a career in public safety. It includes an initial six-weeks paid summer training program for rising seniors, some weekend work during the senior school year, and another four-to-six weeks of paid training for returning students the next summer. Interns who complete the certification courses and meet the agency requirements will be eligible for a fast track to employment with our Emergency Medical Services Department or Consolidated 9-1-1 Center.

Applications and qualifications can be found at workfor911.com and are due by April 7, 2023.
