Sorare: What is Sorare and how NFT change MLB

In 2018, 75% of all sports fans in the US played fantasy sports. The industry is huge and millions of MLB fans choose their 26-28 man roster each year. Another industry that is on the rise is NFTs, and it was only a matter of time before these two worlds collided. In a game that revolves around scarcity and economy, Sorare believes that they have found the answer in using blockchain.

What is Sorare?

MLB Sorare is a free-to-play MLB fantasy baseball game. However, the key difference is that it uses digital player cards which are NFTs. NFTs are tokens that cannot be duplicated, therefore the exact scarcity of cards is pre-determined and intentional. The scarcity of the NFT cards are determined by the blockchain in which each card’s ownership record and quantity is recorded on a public ledger; albeit pseudo anonymised.

So, all of your favourite baseball stars come in the form of a secure digital asset which can be put together to create a strategic line-up.

During tournaments, your team scores are linked with the real-life performances from the players within it. Players who partake in tournaments earn XP which increases their power. In a global game of who can accumulate the highest points, a whole host of rewards can be won.

The true fun of Sorare is within its MLB marketplace where you can trade your digital NFT cards with no limitations.

Getting started

New managers of Sorare MLB start by choosing their favourite common card among a range of top baseball players. The remaining 12 cards are randomly allocated between 4 starting pitchers, 2 relief pitchers, 2 corner infielders, 2 middle infielders, and 2 outfielders. Once you have your 13 cards, you can start strategizing with your line-up.

Scarcity of cards

As mentioned earlier, the scarcity of the NFT cards is determined by the blockchain. The 13 cards you start off with are common cards; they’re so in abundance (unlimited availability) that they cannot be bought or sold. However, scarcer cards can be won during tournaments or bought on the marketplace.

Limited cards (yellow) have 5,00 units available each season, whilst Rare (red) has 1,000, Super Rare (blue) has 100, and Unique (black) has just one unit each season. So, a unique card is truly unique in this case. To check the scarcity, the serial number can help determine this too.

Playing the game

Sorare is a little bit like other fantasy MLBs in its rules, though there may be some unique differences. Your line-up must consist of 7 players, 1 of each of the following: starting pitcher, relief pitcher, corner infielder, middle infielder, outfielder, extra hitter, and finally flex. The latter two can be any position player.

The points are detailed on the Sorare website and will never change. Ultimately, the goal is to make sure you stay on top of your 3-4 day game weeks. Such bi-weekly competitions make the game never boring; just make sure to lock in line ups over 10 minutes before the game week begins.
