Charleston’s Favorite Son Bringing Out All the Stops with Inaugural Music Festival
Jeff Walker, Entertainment Writer
Since his meteoric rise nearly three decades ago with Hootie & the Blowfish through his 14-year run as one of country music’s superstars, low country native Darius Rucker has done nothing but give back to to the community and his home state of South Carolina. This weekend Charleston’s favorite son hosts the first ever Riverfront Revival at Riverfront Park on the old Navy Yard in North Charleston.
Featuring a mix of national, regional, and local artists Riverfront Revival is a two-day music festival encompassing various genres of music including country, indie rock, and Americana with big names Brothers Osbourne, Jimmie Allen, Trampled by Turtles, and Rucker headlining on different nights.
Not only is Rucker bringing great artists and musicians to the banks of the Cooper River he’s providing an incredible marketplace for food & beverage as well as select retailers. Over a dozen vendors offering up awesome edible and potent potables including partnerships with Bud Light, Coca-Cola, Palmetto Brewing, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and Truly Hard Seltzer.
Among the locals include Life Raft Treats serving up their unique ice cream treats and candies (ask about the chicken leg), and Smash City Burgers, everyone’s favorite smashed down and sauced up all beef burgers. If you’re a burger fan this is the food truck, you’ll want to chow down at. For those who want to get their BBQ fix on, I recommend Southern Roots Smokehouse, and for those itching for seafood maybe make your way to And Lobster specializing in New England lobster and crab rolls. Others representing the greater low country include Red’s Icehouse, Sea Island Geechee Kitchen out of Adams Run, and Mr. Popper’s Kettle Corn from Cottageville.
Want some really cool attire, The Original Charleo will be on site selling their brand of hats, hoodies, shirts, and flip-flops. Drop by Lowcountry Wood Art Charleston’s own Alfred Conley creates amazing pieces using repurposed bourbon or wine barrels. For the free spirits you might want to drop by Savannah’s own Mamie Ruth, who designs eco-friendly clothing and accessories for the creative thinkers, peacemakers and the front row girls that just want to have fun. Continuing in the utopian theme Andremi Designs bills their wares ‘for the bohemian & the princess, including a plethora of wearable leather including masks, cuffs, bracelets, purses, and purses. If you have a few minutes Andre will size a leather bracelet for that perfect fit.
Be sure not to miss the artisans vending their jewelry, clothing, and arts & crafts, or the variety of food and drink options at Riverfront Revival. A majority of the vendors are on the opposite side of the park furthest from the main stage. Walk under the trees and look for several smaller villages for the artisans, and full row of eateries. There’s lots to offer if you just take the time to look around the entire park.
While dining and shopping are available all day long, live music flows continually from two stages with the larger Live Oak stage providing the backdrop for the Nikki Lane, Maggie Rose, Larry Fleet, Jimmie Allen, and Darius on day one, with the slighter smaller Magnolia stage playing host to Elizabeth Covington, Drew Dangerfield, our own Lauren Hall, Mitchell Lee, Blue Dogs, and Susto.
On Sunday the main stage will feature Funk You, The War & Treaty, Trampled by Turtles, and Brothers Osbourne. Over on Magnolia Lauren Jenkins will kick off the afternoon at 2pm followed by Radney Foster, Wild Rivers and Charley Crockett.
The weather forecast presents as phenomenal this coming weekend, with daytime highs in the upper 70’s cooling down into the mid 60’s after sunset. If you love country music and its off-shoot variations of Americana and indie rock country than the inaugural Riverfront Revival is the place to be on Saturday or Sunday. General admission tickets for single day or two days are still available.
As your host Darius would say and sing about, ‘When was the last time you did something for the first time‘. Join Holy City country music fans for a good time this weekend at Riverfront Park. For complete details and scheduled artist times visit https://www.riverfrontrevival.com/
