Lowcountry Food Bank announced today that Publix Super Markets Charities has donated $135,000 to Lowcountry Food Bank to purchase fresh produce and a new Lowcountry Food Bank box truck, which will replace an aging vehicle. Publix is donating $5.65 million to Feeding America member food banks and other nonprofit organizations to help alleviate hunger in communities within Publix’s operating area.
“Hunger relief continues to be a cornerstone of our community efforts, and it’s our privilege to support organizations throughout the Southeast,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones. “We are grateful for the opportunity to support Lowcountry Food Bank and to alleviate hunger in the communities we serve and put food on the tables of our neighbors in need.”
The food insecurity rate remains high at more than 9% in the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina that Lowcountry Food Bank serves. This is equivalent to nearly 145,000 of our neighbors, of whom 42,850 are children.
