Press Release
The Lowcountry is slowly dipping its toes back into the theater scene following the many closures and cancellations caused by the pandemic. HEART Inclusive Arts Community, the unique and inclusive performing arts group based in Downtown Charleston, is no exception. This summer, HEART returns to the stage with their first new, original musical production since 2019.
Some Kind of Funny is a tale of two wannabes trying to break out in the world of stand up comedy. Jake is a cut up, but he can't write a joke to save his set. Val is a goldmine of jokes, but when she hits the stage, she finds herself freezing up. They unite to make their stand up dreams come true. Featuring hit songs and parodies from the last 40 years of Top 40, audiences will be humming along the whole night. With an all new original book written, produced, and performed by HEART's studio of artists (lovingly known as HEARTists). This year, the show includes a few surprise performances from other local performers, including powerhouse actor and singer Clyde Moser as Jake Babbitt (Tier5, Footlight Players, CofC).
HEART is a nonprofit, multidisciplinary arts studio for adults with disabilities. Formed in 2014, HEART has made a space where diverse individuals with disabilities can grow as artists. Together, HEART creates visual arts, music, performance events and theater productions that reflect the HEARTists' inner lives, lived experiences, and views of the world around them. Creating original shows by and for the HEARTists allows everyone to play out the stories and characters they would like to portray and see on the stage.
Some Kind of Funny is set to premiere at the Charleston Music Hall on July 10th, 2022. Go to www.heartsc.org/funny for more information.
