Press Release

This May, Charleston Stage will be presenting a free fully staged, professional production of Robert Lewis Stevenson’s pirate classic, Treasure Island. This is a free hour-long family musical comedy production, produced as a part of Charleston Stage’s CityStage Community Tours. Treasure Island features performers from Charleston Stage’s Resident Professional Acting Company and a rousing score of Gilbert and Sullivan pirate songs. Familiar swashbuckling pirate characters such as Long John Silver, Billy Bones, and Blind Pew will take to the stage in this hilarious rip-roaring pirate romp. The production features colorful costumes, brilliant lights, and dazzling sets fully staged on a grand outdoor stage.

“We’re excited to launch this tour into full swing this May,” says Director Marybeth Clark. “We began the initial stages of our CityStage Community Tours back in October with Junie B. Jones Is Not a Crook. That community tour made stops at four Charleston area schools and one library including: Angel Oak Elementary, Sanders-Clyde Elementary, Mary Ford Early Learning and Family Center, Chicora Elementary School and St. Paul’s Hollywood Library. But the goal was always to expand this initiative even further, bringing fully staged professional productions with elaborate lights, costumes, and sets all fully staged on a grande outdoor stage we could bring into the community. And our goal was to provide it absolutely free for the community, bringing the magic of live theatre into every corner of the Lowcountry. We’re very excited that our CityStage Community Tour of Treasure Island will be showcased in four locations throughout the Lowcountry this month.”

Treasure Island will be performed at Alhambra Hall in Mt. Pleasant on May 12th at 5:30pm, at the City of North Charleston Oak Terrace Community Park on May 19th at 6pm, near the gazebo in Hampton Park on May 20th at 6pm, as well as at Davis-Bailey Park in St. George on May 21st at 6pm. Some events will begin earlier with food trucks and lawn games, and patrons are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating to enjoy the festivities.
