The Charleston Battery announced Friday the signing of midfielder Enock Kwakwa to the 2022 roster, pending league and federation approval. Kwakwa joins the club ahead of the March 19th match against Detroit City FC and will be poised for a Patriots Point debut on April 1st.
“I am really honored to be with the Charleston Battery, they have welcomed me to the family and that’s what every player needs,” said Kwakwa. “I’m looking forward to this season with my new teammates and to winning games as a team.
“The move to the United States has been lovely so far and I’m enjoying it. I am so excited to play in front of our amazing fans on April 1, I can’t wait, but first is Detroit this weekend.”
The 27-year-old has amassed plenty of experience around Europe prior to his move to the USL Championship. Kwakwa is a product of the Manchester City FC Academy after being identified through the Right to Dream Academy in his native Ghana. He was a member of the Man City system during the same time as current teammate Dominic Oduro, who also was part of the Right to Dream Academy.
Kwakwa most recently competed with Jönköpings Södra IF of the Swedish Superettan from 2019 to 2021, making 44 appearances across all competitions. Enock additionally played for Falkenbergs FF (Swedish Superttan) and Ullensaker/Kisa IL (Norwegian 1. divisjon) on full contracts from 2014 to 2019.
Battery Head Coach Conor Casey highly regards what Kwakwa can add to the defensive midfield.
“Enock is very good with his technique, he’s played football in Europe for a number of years, and he’s got a great personality,” said Coach Casey. “We’re hoping he’s going to be a big piece for us in the midfield. Kwakwa is good at turning in those little pockets of space and playing the ball forward while covering a lot of ground.”
With the City academy, Kwakwa was loaned to Finnish side Turun Palloseura in 2014 and Norwegian club Strømsgodset from 2012 to 2013, where he won the Norwegian Eliteserien in 2013.
Enock is looking forward to the Stateside move and rejoining Oduro in Charleston.
“It’s nice to have a really close friend like Dominic on the same team,” said Kwakwa. “He has been in the USL for a while now, we’ve played together in the same academies, and it’s amazing to have him next to me again.”
Kwakwa elevates the squad to 26 players and will wear the number 21 for the Battery.
