Charleston County Government on Thursday reported that 99% of employees have complied with the COVID-19 vaccine mandate, which required all employees to be fully vaccinated or submit a medical or religious exemption by November 7, 2021.
“As the elected leadership of the County, we have a responsibility to the public,” said Charleston County Council Chairman Teddie Pryor. “This responsibility means that we sometimes are required to make decisions for the greater good, that may not be popular, but are warranted. In this case, our decision was supported by 99% of our employees complying. This is about responsibility and respect for their fellow employees, and for those we serve on a day-to-day basis, and I am confident it was in the best interest of our community.”
Charleston County Administrator Bill Tuten agreed with Chairman Pryor.
“The Council's decision to require vaccinations was about keeping our staff safe, as well as the citizens who visit our facilities,” Tuten said. “This was our top priority, and we appreciate those who complied,” said n. “Only six employees out of 1,333 employees who fall under the Administrator failed to comply with the Council's decision, showing support and understanding by an overwhelming majority of our team. We are certainly pleased with this effort.”
