On Thursday, October 14th at 6 pm, The Charleston Library Society (CLS) will welcome Dr. Jim Downs and Dr. Jacob Steere-Williams for an evening lecture regarding Downs' newest book, Maladies of Empire, and Dr. Steere-Williams' book, The Filth Disease.
Downs' book covers a sweeping global history that looks beyond European urban centers to show how slavery, colonialism, and war propelled the development of modern medicine.
Perfect to pair with Steere-Williams' investigation of local outbreaks of typhoid fever in Victorian Britain led to the emergence of the modern discipline of epidemiology as the leading science of public health.
