The Charleston City Council meeting on Tuesday night descended into a shameful display from many of the residents in attendance. The 90-minute public comment section quickly became chaotic as multiple speakers and audience members got into shouting matches, called each other (and council members) names, and allegedly much more.
Most of the speakers were voicing their opposition to potential mask mandate for schools within the city limits. The measure ultimately failed to pass.
ABC News 4’s Dean Stephens had the following to say in a Tuesday news broadcast: “Civil discourse became a flurry of name-calling where one doctor who spoke to the crowd told me they were spit on, called a whore, a white piece of trash, and a word we won’t even say on TV – all in the presence of children.”
