b.minton, a women-owned company based on James Island that curates self-care gift boxes for women, launched during the pandemic and recently entered the 9th Annual FedEx Small Business Grant Contest. This national grant program awards twelve small businesses up to $50,000 for business growth.
Coming to b.minton from the nonprofit sector, co-founders Eileen Dougherty and Leah Farrell applied for the grant as a way to grow their small business during a time when small businesses are feeling additional economic stress as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Starting a small business is hard, but starting a business on the day the World Health Organization declares a pandemic, is really hard,” Dougherty said. “The business environment is just not the same as pre-pandemic. We've totally revamped our business to focus on online sales and collaborate with other locally owned businesses. Women are loving their b.minton boxes, and we applied to the FedEx grant so we can share the gift of lasting self-care with a wider audience.”
b.minton, like many businesses that launched in 2020, did not qualify for pandemic relief funds (based on the length of time in business). The FedEx grant, which includes public voting as part of the evaluation criteria, will be an essential boost for b.minton. The voting period is March 10, 2021–March 24, 2021.
