Mother Emanuel AME to Host Drive-Thru “Play Ball” Event on Saturday

As part of an ongoing effort to bridge tangible connections between baseball and the Black community, Major League Baseball will co-host three drive-thru “PLAY BALL” events with Black Churches this Saturday, February 27th in Charleston, Oklahoma City, and Richmond.

The socially-distanced occasions are part of a community event series that MLB and Black Churches are co-hosting throughout the country, providing families and children with bat and ball sets that they can safely enjoy at home and various parts of their neighborhoods, such as parks and playgrounds.

The Charleston event will be held at the historic Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church from 11 am to 1 pm. The church is located at 110 Calhoun Street. All elementary school students are eligible to receive free baseball bats, baseballs, and other equipment.

Reverend Eric S. C. Manning, the Senior Pastor of Mother Emanuel, and Chris Singleton, Inspirational Speaker, Charleston RiverDogs employee, and former professional baseball player in the Chicago Cubs organization will both take part in the drive-thru event.

The PLAY BALL initiative is baseball’s collective effort to encourage young people and communities to engage in baseball- or softball-related activities, including formal leagues, special events, and casual forms of play. PlayBall.org is the PLAY BALL initiative’s online home and is accessible via MLB.com, USABaseball.com, USASoftball.com and other partner websites.
