The Charleston to Charleston Literary Festival: Join the Conversation today announced that on November 15, 2020, in partnership with the Charleston Gaillard Center, it will present two live-streamed sessions focused on the impact of COVID-19 on the arts, as well as thoughts about re-imagining art forms in a post-COVID world.
The first session entitled “Rebirth” will be live-streamed at 2 pm. This event will feature a panel of international cultural leaders who will provide their insights regarding the current challenging environment for the arts as well as opportunities, ideas and hopes for the future.
The panel will be chaired by Sir Simon Schama, noted author, television presenter, and academic. Panelists will include Sheena Wagstaff, Head of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; Kwame Kwei-Armah, Director of the Young Vic Theatre in London; and Baroness Gail Rebuck, former Chair and CEO of Penguin Random House UK. Following the “Rebirth” event, the Festival will present a live-streamed session at 3:30 pm entitled “Rebirth: Charleston.” From the stage of the Charleston Gaillard Center, a distinguished panel of the Lowcountry’s cultural leaders and influencers will address the challenges of 2020, and aspirations for the future, but with a particular focus on the Lowcountry and its vibrant and important cultural community. “Rebirth: Charleston” will include the following panelists: internationally acclaimed artist Jonathan Green; Ken Lam, Music Director of the Charleston Symphony since 2015; Nigel Redden, General Director of Spoleto Festival USA, who has been a major contributor to Charleston’s cultural renaissance during his 35-year affiliation with Spoleto; Martha Rivers Ingram, business executive, entrepreneur, philanthropist and patron of the arts; and Grammy Award-winning musician Charlton Singleton, co-founder of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, founding member of Ranky Tanky, and Artist-in-Residence Emeritus at the Charleston Gaillard Center. Maura Hogan, the arts editor of The Post & Courier, will moderate the discussion.

“We are excited to be partnering with the Gaillard to present these two sessions, which we hope will be a catalyst to stimulate discussions and actions to restore, reinvigorate, and renew our cultural institutions and allow them to emerge from the COVID crisis stronger than ever,” Walter Fiederowicz, President of Charleston to Charleston, Inc., said.
“Producing these timely live-streamed sessions from the Martha & John M. Rivers Performance Hall helps fulfill the Gaillard Center’s essential role as a cultural resource for the Charleston community,” Stephen A. Bedard, President and CEO of the Charleston Gaillard Center, said. “It is one of the several ways the Gaillard Center has provided enriching experiences for our region during the tough times associated with the pandemic. The Gaillard Center is honored to play a part in this wonderful event.”
Attendees viewing from home can live-stream both panel discussions for free.
