Following the Supreme Court's ruling that firing someone for being LGBTQ violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Rep. Joe Cunningham released the following statement:
“Up until this morning, it was possible to get married on Sunday and fired on Monday morning, simply as a result of who you are or who you love. Today, our LGBTQ brothers and sisters received long overdue workplace protections and can no longer be fired for their sexual orientation or gender identity. Every single American deserves the opportunity to earn a living and provide for their families without fear of discrimination. I join the LGBTQ community in celebrating this incredible victory for true equality and justice. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to join the House in passing the Equality Act and further enshrine these hard-fought protections into law.”
