WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary completed a series sweep of College of Charleston with a 5-4 win on Sunday afternoon in a back-and-forth 10-inning affair.
The win lifts William & Mary (28-19, 10-11 CAA) into fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association standings, while College of Charleston’s (28-19, 10-8CAA) hold on second-place falls to one game over third-place James Madison. William & Mary pushed across five runs on 12 hits – including two home runs – compared to four runs on eight base knocks for the Cougars.
Chaz Davey (North Augusta, S.C.) delivered the key hit for the Cougars with a bases-clearing, three-run double in the seventh to put CofC ahead, 4-3.Tanner Steffy (Chapin, S.C.) went 2-for-5 with a double in his collegiate debut, as Clay Hunt (Fort Mill, S.C.) clubbed his fourth homer of the season. Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) each drew three walks, as Hart moved intoa tie for the all-time lead at CofC with 125 career free passes.
Zach Williams (Marietta, Ga.) battled through five and one-third innings, allowing three runs. Josh Price (Dillon, S.C.) struck out three and surrendered one run in two and two-thirds. Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) took the loss, allowing one run and striking out four in one and two-thirds innings.
Brandon Racquet went 3-for-4 with a game-tying solo homer to pace the Tribe, as Jack Cone drove in the winning run with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the 10th. Kyle Wrighte hit a two-run home run in the second inning.
Zach Tsakounis allowed one run and fanned three in four innings of work; Nick Butts was tagged for two runs on one hit and four walks over two and two-thirds frames. Jamie Sara surrendered one run, while Justin Pearson tossed three and one-third shutout innings to earn the win.
Charleston returns to the diamond on Tuesday at Charleston Southern. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
