Williams, Davey Pace Cougars to 5-1 Win Over Eagles

STATESBORO, Ga. — Zach Williams (Marietta, Ga.) pitched into the seventh inning, and Chaz Davey (North Augusta, S.C.) collected three hits with two doubles to help the College of Charleston baseball team to a 5-1 win over Georgia Southern on Wednesday evening.

With the win, College of Charleston (27-14) collects its fourth victory in its last five games, and snaps a four-game skid against Georgia Southern (24-18).The Cougars also pick up their first win in Statesboro since the 2015 season. Charleston plated five runs – three with two outs – on 10 hits, including four doubles, while holding the Eagles to one run on six base knocks.

Davey drove in one run and collected two doubles as part of a 3-for-4 night, while Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) reached base three times with two singles and a walk. Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI single, as Harrison Hawkins (Bishopville, S.C.) and Ari Sechopoulos (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) each plated one run. Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) reached twice with a double and a walk. The senior second baseman moved into a tie for second all-time with his 121st career free pass, and also collected his 33rd stolen base of the season.

Williams earned his third win of the season with his second quality start, allowing one run on five hits in six and two-thirds innings without a walk. Josh Price (Dillion, S.C.) recorded four consecutive outs between the seventh and eighth innings, before Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the victory.

Steven Curry led the way for Georgia Southern with a 2-for-4 effort, and scored the Eagles’ lone run on a base knock by Mason McWhorter. Noah Ledford, Jason Swan, and Blake Evans each collected a single.

Tyler Owens lasted only one inning in his third start of the season against the Cougars, allowing one run on one hit and one walk. David Johnson surrendered one run on three hits over two frames to take the loss, as Braxton Johns fanned four and allowed one run over four innings of work. Jonathan Edwards, Jacob Parker, and Lawson Humphries combined for two runs on three hits and four walks over the final two frames.

Charleston returns to the diamond on Friday when the Cougars open a three-game series with UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association play. First pitch isset for 6:00 p.m.
