The Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) announced its 2017–18 season, which will run from September 2017 to April 2018. The season features special guest musicians, including pianist and artist-in-residence Sandra Wright Shen, and a new home for the Chamber Music Series.
The upcoming season’s Masterworks performances at the Gaillard Center range from Beethoven to Bach to Tchaikovsky. In honor of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, the CSO will perform both a Masterworks and a Pops concert dedicated to the great conductor and composer. Other highlights include Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the CSO Chorus and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. Patrons will be treated to special performances by Sandra Wright Shen, who will teach master classes to local students.
The Pops concerts feature an imaginative line-up with lively music from Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Schindler’s List and Superman in celebration of John Williams’ 85th birthday as well as “Celebrate L’Italia!” – a musical celebration of both old and new Italian music. The CSO’s Annual Holiday Pops concert in December promises to be a treat for the entire family. Feast on the music of Gershwin and Bernstein featuring “Rhapsody in Blue” and “West Side Story” followed by a New York-themed gala fundraiser sponsored by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League in January.
The Chamber Music performances will be hosted by Ken Lam and will be held at the Dock Street Theatre at 7:30 p.m. The series includes Schubert’s ever-popular Trout Quintet, wind ensemble selections by Dvořák and Brahms and strings and oboe music from Britten and Elgar.
Special events include the symphony’s annual Holy City Messiah performances with the CSO Chorus, the return of the Canadian Brass with the CSO Brass for a holiday special and a dramatic performance of Carmina Burana with the orchestra, the CSO Chorus and the Nashville Ballet co-presented by the Gaillard Center.
New subscriptions will be available May 1. Note that new subscribers will be seated on a first come, first served basis by section selected, and are encouraged to submit subscriptions soon in order to obtain the best seats available.
