Duke Buckner officially filed his candidacy for U.S. Congress for SC's 6th District over the weekend. If he wins the Republican Primary, Buckner will most likely face incumbent Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn (D), who is currently in his 16th term.
“Mr. Clyburn has been in office for over 30 years. He will be turning 84 in July, and it's time for change," Buckner said. "Despite having high rank in Congress, we still remain the poorest congressional district in the state and the 7th poorest in the country."
The 6th District covers 14 counties and is the largest in the state stretching from Jasper to Florence county.
"It's time to turn the 'corridor of shame' to the corridor of fame," Buckner said. "Our citizens deserve better!"
Buckner is a 1994 graduate of SC State University, a former public school English teacher and newspaper owner. Currently, he practices law in his home town of Walterboro.
"Rep. Clyburn has served and done a lot, but it's time to pass the baton, and give someone else a chance," said Buckner. "I promise the voters that I will work to improve the quality of life for all citizens. We can not remain stagnant for another 30 years.”
Buckner said his top legislative priorities will be to secure the southern border, get food and gas prices under control, reduce the national debt, and improve education.
