Brookgreen Gardens will offer programming for everyone throughout the month of March, including a butterfly house tour, a fun-filled celebration on Read Across America Day, an ongoing special exhibition, and more. Special Exhibition:
Art Deco: Defining an Era, Now – April 21
This exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in the glamorous world of Art Deco and discover the sleek lines, bold geometric shapes, and opulent materials that define this iconic 1920s and 1930s design movement. Featuring Art Deco art and artifacts, guests can experience the elegance and sophistication of an era that continues to inspire.
March Events:
Read Across America Day, March 2, 2024, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Brookgreen invites children and families to the Enchanted Storybook Forest for a day where nature and literacy combine on Read Across America Day. Children's stories will come alive through make-and-take crafts, S.T.E.M. challenges, live animals, and exciting games. Children are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character for this fun-filled day.
Define ‘Public’ Art with Jarod Charzewski, March 5, 2024, 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
The past two decades of art production have provided citizens of the world with vast diversity in acceptable, traditional, permanent, and classical public art. These new perimeters have challenged all aspects, from materials and fabrication to installation and conceptualization. Join artist and College of Charleston Professor Jarod Charzewski in the Ron Daise Auditorium for an informative discussion that will contain images of contemporary examples as well as his own accomplishments.
Photo Walks in The Garden, March 6, 2024, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
On the first Wednesday of the month, guests can join photographers Anne Malarich, George DeCamp, and Rick Farrell for a two-hour walk through Brookgreen Gardens with cameras in hand. Various subjects, such as flowers, butterflies, and birds, will be discussed along the way, in addition to photographic topics such as exposure and composition.
The Whispering Wings Butterfly House with Kaela Miller, March 7, 2024, 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Brookgreen Gardens' Horticulturist, Kaela Miller, will take guests on a special tour of the Whispering Wings Butterfly House as it prepares for the 2024 season. Kaela will discuss host plants, nectar plants, and what to plant to create a pollinator garden. Please note that butterflies will not be present in the exhibit until May.
Nature's Nasties with Ranger Ann Wilson, March 12, 2024, 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
All sorts of creatures and plants can potentially cause harm while having fun in the woods or at the beach. Ever worry about poison ivy, jellyfish, stingrays, snakes, sharks, or other scary animals? This informative program, led by Interpretive Ranger at Myrtle Beach State Park, Ann Wilson, will uncover some of the myths and help attendees identify some potential dangers and ways to avoid them while still appreciating and enjoying the great outdoors.
Tea Tasting, March 12, 2024, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Guests are invited to Keepsakes, the Museum Shop at Brookgreen, for a Tea Tasting event. Visitors can sample various teas, meet with a representative of a popular tea company, and find the right flavors that suit their needs.
Ron Daise presents "Nottin bot de Rice!" March 13 and 27, 2024, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Entertaining and educational, this interactive cultural game show hosted by author, performer, and cultural preservationist Ron Daise informs viewers about the rice culture lived and passed down by Gullah Geechee people of the southeastern coastal United States. Each guest becomes a "contestant" who will gain "points" for answering questions about aspects of rice production, Gullah Geechee people, songs, history, culture, foods, and trivia. Participants will learn how greatly Gullah Geechee culture has impacted the American cultural landscape.
Collage Birdies, March 15, 2024, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
In this class, fun and sassy are the only rules. Participants will create a flock of birds that Audubon never dreamt of. Old magazines, scissors, glue, and markers will make happy herons, boisterous blue jays, silly seagulls, or cranky crows. The class will be led by Terry Belanger, who studied art in college, and later became a needlework shop owner, designer, and teacher.
Estate Planning Workshop, March 21, 2024, 3 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Estate planning is something everyone must think about but is easy to put off for a later date. Brookgreen Gardens is hosting a complimentary estate planning workshop in the Jennewein Gallery just for this reason. Dalton B. Floyd, Jr., senior partner at The Floyd Law Firm, will provide an overview of basic concepts and tools that can be applied to anyone's personal plan needs and answer general questions. Artist Talk with Lauren Sloan, March 22, 2024, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Guests are invited to discover Lauren Sloan's art that emphasizes the connection between African Americans and their land. Inspired by visits to Penn Center, Mitchell's Plain, St. Helena, and Beaufort, Sloan's work uses mixed media to combine landscapes, poems, photographs, and plants. Engage with this visual journey as Sloan skillfully delves into these compelling themes through photography, print transfers, watercolor, and fabric.
Members Only Eggstravaganza!, March 30, 2024, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Guests will enter the showcase of Barnyard Friends as delightful characters come to life in a forest full of surprises, treats, and fun. The search for eggs and other seasonal goodies will feature a trip around the Enchanted Storybook Forest and Lowcountry Zoo. Children and their guardians will receive a map at the registration table leading them to areas where they can find items for their spring baskets. Families will enjoy meeting and taking photos with favorite Barnyard characters such as a duck, fox, frog, other friendly animals, and of course, a rabbit! The sightings of live animals throughout the Lowcountry Zoo and playground structures in the Storybook Forest will be fun and exciting for all.
